2016 Hyde Vineyard Pinot Noir
This iconic site consistently delivers some of the most elegant and refined Pinots in our portfolio. In 2016, the Hyde Vineyard produced very small yields of just over two tons to the acre, resulting in a wine of exceptional density and concentration. A classic Hyde Vineyard Pinot Noir. Aromas of dried roses, cedar cigar box, almond toffee, and cocoa are exquisitely balanced with ripe cherry and cranberry notes. Ripe and full, yet effortlessly light and nuanced on the palate, the flavors dart and weave around a seamless juicy core of fresh red fruit. 2016 is a standout vintage.
2016 was another fantastic growing season. It started out with good winter rainfall, which after four years of drought, was a big relief. While the summer of 2016 was quite hot, a perfectly timed cool-down over a three-week period in August allowed the grapes to ripen with moderate sugar levels. It also preserved the acidity that is so essential to making great Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Thus, the quality is exceptional with vivid, alluring flavors in the Chardonnays and deep colors and gorgeous aromatics in the Pinot Noir.
Purchased by Larry Hyde in 1979, and planted two years later, this renowned property is cultivated as 44 distinct blocks, and includes a veritable who’s who of the finest Pinot Noir clones. Our Hyde Vineyard Pinot, comes from three small blocks within the larger Hyde Vineyard. These blocks spotlight new and older plantings of the famous Hyde-Calera selection, and include coveted grapes from the “old field,” which was planted in 1999.
